As preseason begins to wrap up for the Houston Dash, the team and new head coach Fabrice Gautrat are gearing up for the season opener against Washington Spirit on March 14. We sat down with Gautrat today as he shared his thoughts on the team's performance so far, updates on some players, and what’s in store as the Dash prepare for the upcoming challenge of the NWSL season.

Positive Progress After California Training

The team’s return from their California training camp has been a productive one, according to Coach Gautrat. He noted the team's strong efforts, especially in the final third of the field, where they’ve been focusing on developing clearer attacking strategies. "It really showed, especially in the scrimmage this past weekend," Gautrat said, expressing his satisfaction with the team's output and overall performance. The new boss is pleased with the effort and ideas his players have brought to the pitch as they learn a new system and tactics ahead to the new season.

Ramona’s Return and What’s Next

Ramona Bachmann, who recently returned to the team after time away, is now in camp and getting integrated into the team. Gautrat highlighted that, while there are no immediate expectations for her, the team is focused on helping her reintegrate and regain her full fitness. "We’re still kind of in that protocol phase of just return to play," Gautrat explained. He added that the most important thing is to create a supportive environment that allows Ramona to ease back into her groove, and once she’s ready, the team will assess how best to incorporate her into their strategy. Gautrat expressed excitement for what her talent and ability will bring to the team moving forward.

Rookie Maggie Graham: A Versatile Asset

One player making waves in camp is rookie Maggie Graham. Known for her versatility, Graham has showcased her ability to play across multiple positions during the preseason. Gautrat was particularly impressed with her technical skills and stamina. "She can play anywhere on the field, maybe outside of goalkeeper, which is a huge plus to her and to this team," he said. Gautrat added that Graham’s adaptability gives the team added flexibility, and her contributions, whether in attack or defense, will be key as the season progresses.

A Competitive and Deep Roster

As the team moves closer to the season opener, Gautrat remains confident in the depth and competition within the squad. “Every line has depth, and I believe any player could potentially start over another,” he shared. While Gautrat says he has an idea of who his best eleven might be, the coach is excited to see how competition within the team continues to evolve. “When you have two deep in each position, it creates a really good culture,” Gautrat explained. With the players constantly pushing each other, the team has developed a strong culture of competition and camaraderie that bodes well for the season ahead.

Filling the Leadership Void After Yuki Nagasato’s Retirement

Gautrat sees the recent retirement of veteran Yuki Nagasato as an opportunity for others to step up in leadsership roles. He reflected on Nagasato’s professionalism and the impact she had both on and off the field. "Yuki is a fantastic player...just an utmost pro," Gautrat said. While her absence will certainly be felt in the locker room, the coach is optimistic that other players will rise to the challenge. “I think it gives a great opportunity for other people to step up,” he noted.

A Well-Balanced Roster for the Season

As the team approaches roster compliance and finalizes preparations for the season, Gautrat expressed his satisfaction with the depth across all positions. The arrival of Evelina Duljan and the return of Bachmann, has strengthened the team’s core. “Right now, I’m very pleased with where we’re at,” he said. While the roster could still evolve, Gautrat believes the current squad has already shown great promise, with strong depth ensuring the team is well-equipped for the long season ahead.

Looking Ahead

With a balanced and competitive squad, Gautrat is optimistic about what lies ahead. As the team continues to prepare for the season opener, their focus will be on refining their strategy, maintaining their fitness, and fostering a competitive atmosphere that will drive them to success in the months to come. With the right leadership, skill, and depth, the team is ready to make a strong push as they kick off the season against Washington next week.
