Amanda West’s rookie season with the Houston Dash in 2024 showed potential despite the challenges of transitioning from collegiate to professional soccer. Drafted 36th overall, West joined a Dash team aiming to improve its offensive output after a low-scoring 2023 season. Known for her collegiate success at the University of Pittsburgh, where she was a key player, West faced increased competition and higher stakes in the NWSL.

Throughout the season, West contributed to the Dash attack but faced limited opportunities compared to more seasoned players like Yuki Nagasato and Diana Ordóñez. The Dash’s offense struggled overall, with the team ranking as the league’s lowest in goals scored with 20 in total. However, West’s energy and adaptability were noted as assets, as she played as a wide midfielder and even wing back at times, suggesting she could grow into a more impactful role with further development.

Moment of the season

West’s moment of the season came in the Cinco de Mayo fixture against KC Current. Amanda got the start out wide in Fran Alonso’s 3-5-2 formation. She put in a good shift and was rewarded with her first career goal after taking advantage of a mistake from Kansas City’s defense. Amanda was poised in a hectic situation and her clean, left-footed strike found the back of the net.

Looking forward

While Amanda West’s statistical contributions in her rookie season were modest, her work rate and potential made her a valuable depth option for the Houston Dash during their rebuilding phase. Selected in the final rounds of the 2024 NWSL Draft, she signed a one-year contract with the club. The Dash have not yet announced any roster decisions for 2025, so her future remains up in the air as of now. Despite the uncertainty, her adaptability and promise suggest she could remain a part of the club’s plans under the new technical staff if given the opportunity to further develop.
