Houston Dash 2024 position breakdown: Goalkeepers
Head coach Fran Alonso might need to do a lot of work elsewhere on the field but when it comes to the goalkeeper group he might be in the safest hands. You see what I did there? Anyways, let’s look at the players who will look to guard the net for Houston in 2024.
Emily Alvarado
The Mexican international arrived last season after spending a few years playing with French Division 1 Feminine club Stade de Reims. Emily has yet to debut in a regular season match with the Houston Dash, but saw limited time in the Challenge Cup. Alvarado currently sits second on the depth chart behind Jane Campbell. During her time in Houston, Emily has been called up multiple times to the Mexican women’s national team but was left out of the inaugural 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup. She will need to be ready in case Jane isn’t available sometime during the season.
Jane Campbell
The Houston Dash are lucky to have the best goalkeeper in the league on their roster. Jane has been a brick wall in goal since she was drafted back in 2017 from Stanford. Campbell will enter 2024 in the last year of her current contract with the club. Last season was a career year for Jane as she was named NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year and part of the NWSL Best XI. The starting role is hers to kickoff the year and she will likely keep it the entire year, unless Armageddon takes place. She didn’t spend much time with the team during preseason as she was in the USWNT squad that won first place in the 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup.
Savannah Madden
Madden signed with the Dash last year after she joined the 2023 preseason camp as a non-roster invitee. Like Alvarado, Madden is yet to make her debut with the club. It will be difficult for anyone being behind Jane to break through into the lineup. The 25-year-old keeper from San Diego, California spent her college career at the University of Texas where she received several Big 12 Conference recognitions. She recently received her first call ups to the Peru National Team. Similar to Alvardo, Savannah will look to get an opportunity in case of an emergency.
