HOUSTON DASH ASSISTANT COACH RICKY CLARKE
On the match:
"A tough result. One of the things you saw tonight was the idea of how we wanted to play. When you look at the possession stats, it was 50/50. To come to a place like this, in this type of environment and control half the game. We are very, very proud of the way we played with the ball. At times we made little mistakes and we got punished for them. We know that happens at this level. In terms of being more dangerous and creating more problems than we did the last time we were here, we did that. Overall, frustrated we didn't get a result. We want to win. That's our job. At the same time, I'm really impressed with the way we played based on the circumstances coming into the game."
On having a limited roster for this match:
"You look at the game and the positives are what you just said. We had players that were snapping into tackles. We had players that were comfortable in possession. We were looking for balls in tight areas. These are all the things we've spoken about during the week at training. We knew we had a smaller group coming into the game. We were hit with some illnesses. The thing we spoke about before the game, I was like, who are the Houston Dash? What do we want people to see when we step out onto the field. Tonight, given the situation, you saw a type of Houston Dash who's ready to go into battle and compete for each other. That's what we asked for. We said there were going to be mistakes on the field. It was not the mistakes that defined us. It's the way we responded and the way we worked for each other, and I am incredibly impressed with the mentality tonight. Tough result, but just incredibly proud to coach players with that type of mentality."
On the three players who made their debut and the return of Allysha Chapman:
"Allysha (Chapman) is an incredible athlete. She's been chomping at the bit to get back onto the field. For the three players that had their debuts tonight. It's one of the things that we spoke about with this tournament. It's going to give them some exposure. It's going to give them time on the field. But also, it's going to give them time playing in our system and getting used to the way that we want to play. We talk about it being a village and it is a village. Everyone needs to understand the system. Everyone needs to be able to step in when asked upon. Tonight, you saw that.”
HOUSTON DASH DEFENDER ALLYSHA CHAPMAN
On her preparation to return to the field:
"It started while I was pregnant. I was putting in a shift trying to stay as fit as I could. Honestly, I wish I was back a couple of months ago. It's been about five months now and I've been wanting to get back on the pitch. I have Tavish here with me as well. That's been a new experience. Everywhere I go, he goes. It's been kind of a wild ride, but it's been fun."
On the flow of the game and how she felt being on the field:
"It felt a little clunky for me at times. It will take me a few games to get back into the flow and the speed of play. To just feel what it's like to play in a professional match again. There were times when I could have played quicker. Defensively, there were times where I was a step too late. I just got to keep working, putting in the training and keep getting fitter and faster."
On getting to this stage of her career as a mother:
"It's probably something I should have done more of, reach out to other people and see what their experiences were like. I did see what other clubs were doing as far as childcare and the set up there. I was able to reach out to people that way."
On her drive to come back this season:
"It was a unique challenge for me. I never thought in my life that I would have a kid and try and come back from it. I thought, once I started a family, I would retire. But it turns out I don't have a lot of tangible talents other than soccer, so I'm just going to ride this out for as long as I can (laughs)."
On the value of this tournament for new and younger players:
"It's great. This Summer Cup is a great opportunity to get people minutes, get people experience. Players that are coming back from injury or new players, they haven't had a taste, a real taste of the league yet. It's just great for them to get to showcase what they have and to be able to compete and see what it's like to play in a professional match. You can't replicate it in training. It's a great experience for players that are getting their first cap or that are getting more minutes than they're used to."
