Dynamo captain Hector Herrera injured, could miss beginning of season
As Houston Dynamo players participated in a media roundtable this afternoon, news came out from Glenn Davis that captain Hector Herrera is injured and could miss the beginning of the season. Davis spoke exclusively with Dynamo general manager Pat Onstad and you can see that full interview below.
Onstad calls Herrera’s injury a minor one and he is said to be traveling to Europe to receive treatment. Herrera dealt with a groin injury when he arrived at the Dynamo in 2022 and it hindered him for the remainder of that season. The Dynamo begin their season in the Concacaf Champions Cup with a match against St. Louis CITY SC on February 20.
Midfielder Amine Bassi and defender Franco Escobar were the players remaining to speak during the media roundtable and they both commented on Herrera’s injury.
Bassi thrived playing alongside Herrera in the midfield last season. Ben Olsen and staff could now look to Sebastian Kowalczyk, who today said he sees himself as a natural 8/10 in the midfield, or adjust the role Coco Carrasquilla plays.
Escobar knows losing Herrera is a big blow, especially with the club returning to continental competition. It will be up to the veterans on the team, like Escobar, to help steady the ship in Herrera’s absence. There are a number of veteran leaders in the Dynamo locker room, so you would look for them to handle this as well as possible.
We will have more information on Herrera’s injury and the timeline for his return as it becomes available.
