As preseason continues for the Houston Dynamo, the club is still in the process of adding to the roster. From the front office, to the coaching staff, to the players, there has been talk early in 2025 about the club adding more pieces to the team. Houston currently has one Designated Player spot and one U22 Initiative spot open.

Who is coming to Houston? Let’s take a look at the recent rumors and reports.

Felipe Andrade

The Brazilian center back has been linked to the Dynamo by reports in South America for a week or two. MLS Insider Tom Bogert reported that Houston is in advanced talks with his club, Fluminense in Brazil, to sign Andrade on loan.

The Dynamo have some success in signing center backs from Brazil with Micael now excelling in the first team and possibly close to a big move of his own. Andrade would seemingly play with Dynamo 2 early on and provide depth for the first team.

Ruben Lezcano

Lezcano turns 21 next month. The young Paraguayan had 9 goals and 4 assists for Libertad in the 2024 Clausura and is valued at $4 million by Transfermarkt. He looks like a prototypical number 10, something the Dynamo have been in search for this offseason.

Since the initial reports, Libertad have come out and said essentially if Lezcano is not going to Europe then they want more money for him. Glenn Davis has reported that his sources say the move is just a rumor and has no legs. Is this a negotiating ploy from Libertad to get more money or drive interest in their player? Or is it just wishful thinking? We’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.

Mohamed Abu Fani

Area Sports Network’s Adam Benlaziz reported yesterday that the Dynamo are in talks with Israeli international midfielder Mohamed Abu Fani. His club, Ferencvaros in Hungary, want $4 million for the 26-year-old.

Abu Fani has played as a 10 and an 8 in his career and is very good at creating from the midfield. His profile looks to be similar to Hector Herrera, the former Dynamo captain. If this deal materializes, it would be as a DP. Some similar players to his profile, according to FBref.com are Atletico Madrid’s Rodrigo De Paul, Aston Villa’s Youri Tielemans, and Borussia Dortmund’s Pascal Gross.

Latif Blessing

The Dynamo declined the contract option on Blessing after the 2024 season. The Ghanaian made $650,000 in base salary last season, a number the Dynamo wanted to get away from. However, Blessing has yet to find a new club and with money freed up from Hector Herrera, Coco Carrasquilla, and Sebastian Ferreira leaving town, Blessing could find his way back to Houston on a lower salary number.

Blessing has been posting on social media working out in Houston, even wearing Dynamo gear while doing so. If Blessing is willing to take less money it makes a lot of sense for him to return in 2025. He is very versatile and gives Ben Olsen and the coaching staff a Swiss Army knife that they can deploy in a number of roles.
