Hector Herrera’s time with the Houston Dynamo comes to an end

Just days after their season ended, the Houston Dynamo announced roster decisions. The club exercised options on some players and declined on others, but none were bigger than the decision to decline the option on captain Hector Herrera’s contract.

Herrera joined the Dynamo in the summer of 2022 after signing with the club earlier that season at the end of his contract with Spanish club Atletico Madrid. That season was tough for Herrera as he got his feet under him in a new league while dealing with an injury and preparing for the World Cup.

The 2023 season saw an invigorated Herrera. The Mexican led the Dynamo back to the MLS Cup Playoffs and was named to the MLS Best XI. Herrera finished with four goals and eleven assists and was arguably one of the best midfiedlers, if not players, in all of Major League Soccer.

2024 began with an injury for Herrera. He had surgery to clean up an injury and was out of action until April 20. The Dynamo captain returned and the team made another appearance in the playoffs, but individually he had a down year compared to 2023. Herrera finished with just one goal and one assist. His season, and ultimately his Dynamo career came to an end when he was sent off in Game 2 of the playoff series against the Seattle Sounders for spitting at the referee.

Herrera’s departure opens up a Designated Player spot for the Dynamo. There are a lot of options on what the club could do and General Manager Pat Onstad will address the media on Thursday. We will have much more here at Bayou City Soccer about the potential replacements in the Houston midfield as well as that DP spot.
