We’re continuing our 2024 report card series, recapping each Dynamo and Dash player’s season. Next up is Gabe Segal. Gabe opened the year getting loads of minutes in place of Sebastian Ferreira while injured. Unfortunately, he never played up to the potential he could have had.

2024 in review

Gabe Segal was a late addition to the roster after being traded from New York City FC just a week before the season began. He was brought in to be a backup striker to Sebastian Ferreira, who was thought of as the starter in preseason. Ferreira picked up a hamstring injury in the opening minutes of the year, leading to Segal taking over the job after his goal against Sporting Kansas City.

Segal was given a run of games and looked totally out of place as an MLS starting striker. He didn’t find the back of the net for the twelve appearances in all competitions and his minutes shrunk until he became a non-factor with the first team. His only other goal this season was a garbage time goal against D.C. United when the game was already put to bed.

While he was not very good with the first team, Segal was a star player with the second team scoring ten goals in eleven games for Dynamo 2. He was the catalyst for Dos going on a run in the second half of the season and making the playoffs. This is what propels his grade to a reasonable position. Unfortunately, Segal disappointed in that playoff match against The Town FC.

Moment of the season

Down a goal, Gabe Segal was brought off the bench against Sporting Kansas City to score the equalizing goal just minutes after coming onto the field. His special awareness was great to pick up the space on the back post and head the ball in past Tim Melia. This was the first goal of the season for the Dynamo in MLS play.

Looking forward

Segal’s option was exercised for 2025. He is still on the younger side and was a huge asset to the second team, so giving him another year to prove himself is a fair decision.
