Houston Dynamo player ratings at San Jose Earthquakes

Another road game, another disappointing loss. The Dynamo fell 2-1 on the road to the San Jose Earthquakes. Let’s take a look at how everyone performed.

Starters

Steve Clark-6

Another fairly quiet game in net for Steve. Clark only faced one shot on goal other than penalties. It would be nice to see him save one of the penalties but you can’t be too hard on a goalkeeper there.

Tate Schmitt-6

Tate only managed to play the first 38 minutes due to injury. Schmitt did not do much particularly well and nothing particularly bad either. He did provide some nice width that was missing when he came off. Hopefully he is ready to go again soon.

Teenage Hadebe-5

Not the greatest game from the DP center back. Hadebe was not a total disaster all game but gave away a penalty from a hand ball early to set the tone. He played better as the game went on.

Ethan Bartlow-5

Just like Teenage, Ethan was not a disaster but it was not a particularly great performance as well. He was the better defender in the first half but struggled to keep up at times in the second, giving away the second penalty of the game.

Daniel Steres-4

A rough game for a player who has been very solid all season. It is hard to blame him too much after already starting out of position and then having to switch over the to the left side when Schmitt exited. He definitely put in a great effort, but it was always going to be tough for him, especially with the wide players San Jose have.

Artur-8

Can almost start copy and pasting for Artur every week now. Just another solid performance from the Dynamo’s most consistent performer. He put out all the fires while completing most of his passes to win the possession battle once again.

Hector Herrera-6

Definitely not a horrible game for Hector, but more is expected from him in the big moments. He contributed to the good control of the midfield, he just lacked that extra spark we have seen from him the last few games.

Coco Carrasquilla-6

Coming off international duty with Panama, it was a shock to see Coco play the full 90. For playing on short rest, he put in a really great shift. Just like previous games, his production in the final third was lacking a bit. He did, however, play his best game this season and should have won a second penalty.

Brooklyn Raines-4

Now getting his second start in a row, the young midfielder was asked to play in a different position than normal. As Ben Olsen said, he struggled physically in this game but grew into it as the game went on. Raines did look a bit lost at times and struggled to make a mark on the game. These minutes and lessons learned are great for his development.

Amine Bassi-6

Like last week, Bassi struggled to make a big impact on the game other than scoring the penalty. All goals count so his score is saved once again. He was drifting into other positions to get on the ball, which is great, but the end product is just not there. He should grow into the season more as chemistry develops with those around him.

Corey Baird-3

Another scoreless game for the starting striker. Baird, as usual, was a bit of a ghost at times, only taking 41 touches in the game. He only managed to take one shot that was right at the goalkeeper on a clear-cut chance. He did win a penalty off a silly challenge from Michael Baldisimo. As always, the effort is there but he just is not dangerous enough going forward.

Subs

Franco Escobar-7

It was great to see Escobar back on the field for the first time since week 1. Escobar was much improved from his first game, leading the team in interceptions with 3. A lot was asked of him, having to play right back while also covering left back at times. He made an exceptional play to dribble out of danger in his own penalty box. There is lots to look forward to from the new right back.

Ivan Franco-2

This was easily the most invisible game we have seen from Franco since signing. Ivan was brought on the in the 56th minute and only had 17 touches. None of these touches produced anything meaningful.

Sebastian Ferreira-3

Coming on with 15 minutes to go, he was expected to be the catalyst to an equalizing goal. Sebas struggled to get on the ball much and did not see much service at all. He failed to register a single shot in his limited time.

Nelson Quinones-2

Like Ivan Franco, Quinones was brought on to add some penetration from the wide positions but offered just about nothing. Nelson only managed to complete 1 pass from his 5 touches, with multiple turnovers. With a potential full transfer looming in June, the Dynamo will need to see more from Nelson Quinones.

Coach

Ben Olsen-5

Once again, Ben put out a lineup that could have been seen as questionable before the start of the game. With how poorly the subs played it did give Olsen a little bit of credit for who he was starting with. The team did have two very slow periods in the beginning and the middle of the second half. Ultimately, Olsen is making the midfield and defense look much better than years past, but the offense needs to start showing some end-product soon.
