Houston Dynamo player ratings at Vancouver Whitecaps

Tuesday was more disappointment on the road for the Houston Dynamo. The Dynamo traveled to Vancouver and got destroyed by the Whitecaps 6-2. Let’s take a look at how everyone performed.

Starters

Steve Clark-5

It was an unlucky night for Steve Clark. Vancouver were near perfect with their finishing so there was not much Steve could do all night. Conceding six is never a good look for a goalkeeper, however, no matter the opposition.

Micael-1

Being deployed out of position at left back again, Micael looked completely lost. Multiple goals were conceded by him either not communicating, having poor positioning, or missing a potential block.

Ethan Bartlow-1

Just like Micael, Bartlow was a complete disaster. Tons of horrible giveaways, bad communication, and awful positioning all game long. For the first goal, who knows what he and Micael were thinking on that play.

Daniel Steres-6

Steres was easily the brightest of awful defenders last night. The only goal he was really at fault for was the third goal where he lost an aerial duel that unfortunately fell right to a Whitecaps player. His distribution was solid and he played a great pass in behind for Bassi’s goal.

Franco Escobar-3

Like the other defenders, his positioning defensively was truly terrible. He over committed to the attack way too many times without bringing anything of quality. He had a great chance late in the game to create another goal and failed.

Artur-3

Artur did not do the defenders any favors, offering no defensive presence in the midfield. Artur was a training cone that was just passed around all night as Vancouver dominated the second half.

Hector Herrera-3

This gave me flashbacks of Herrera’s performance last season against Philly. He had an awful giveaway that led to the fourth goal that put the game out of reach. He misjudged the flight of the ball and completely missed an interception to lead to the fifth goal.

Amine Bassi-7

Bassi was a bright spot for this team, putting on a terrific first half display. He was constantly looking to play Aliyu in behind to great effect. He then went on to score the second goal of the game with a clever run and finish. His production slowed down in the second half, but who’s didn’t?

Corey Baird-7

Baird had another solid performance, working extremely hard for the team. He was rewarded with his fourth goal of the season in all competitions with a really nice finish on his weaker foot. The team massively dropped off after his substitution.

Coco Carrasquilla-6

Coco played himself a solid game. He was very bright running with the ball in transition and had the assist for the first goal. There was some luck to that, however. In the second half he struggled to add much of a spark and looked like he gave up after the red card. Defending on goal six was really poor, as he was just walking and not even trying.

Aliyu Ibrahim-7

Aliyu continues to provide a great spark with his work off the ball. His runs in behind are insanely intelligent and he provides a great dynamic to the offense. He really excelled in the box manipulating his body to turn defenders and get shots off. Unfortunately, his great play was never rewarded with a goal with his multiple chances. If he gets the finishing right he will be a handful.

Substitutes

Nelson Quinones-0

He managed to make a really bad decision and cost the Dynamo any chance of getting something out of the game all in five minutes. Impressive…

Thor Ulfarsson-4

Thor came on and was extremely quiet. It was a hard situation for him, so trying not to be too harsh on him. He could definitely be better.

Erik Sviatchenko-6

Coming on while down two goals and a man is always a rough spot no matter who you are. There was not much he could have done for goals five or six. The sixth goal came as a result of him having to cover Micael’s poor positioning. He had an excellent long ball in behind for Escobar that somehow was not converted.

Luis Caicedo-5

Like Erik, it was an impossible situation for him to succeed. He did nothing wrong, while doing nothing particularly well either.

Ivan Franco-N/A

Franco came on after being down 5-2, what can he do?

Head Coach

Ben Olsen-6

This game was more of a case of individual disaster than poor preparation and systems. There was not much Olsen can do when his players are falling asleep in key moments of the game. He set up the team well to attack and gave the forwards some confidence. The only massive fault was continuing Micael at left back. That experiment should stop there.
