Hustle Town Spotlight: The Surge

In a different life, we had the opportunity to sit down and talk to Jeff Bonilla and Sergio Zelaya. Sergio is the president of the Hustle Town supporters’ group, The Surge. Jeff serves as the vice president of the energetic group. We will definitely revisit with the guys mid-season to see how everything is going in 2023 and have the conversation in our Bayou City Soccer podcast feed. However, we wanted to give out their information so that if you are inclined to meet up, have a drink, and join the bunch, you’ll find it all here.

The Surge is one of the youngest supporters’ groups in Houston. Their first season was during the craziest year in our lifespan called 2020. Not even quarantine and Covid could bring them down. In fact, they have actually boomed since their inception. They show up to every Houston Dynamo match, and starting last year you will find them rooting on the Dash and Dynamo 2 as well. Game days are not the only time when the get-togethers happen. There is a lot of prep work that goes behind the scenes; whether its painting flags, tifos, or volunteering at various community events. The Surge are here to represent Houston and represent them well.

Home Gamedays

The group shows up early to pregame before every home match at Shell Energy Stadium. You will find The Surge warming up 3 hours before kick-off at Pitch 25, having a good time in the outdoor patio. The walk to the stadium is one of the coolest traditions to see as they are joined by the other supporters groups of the team. Be ready to stand, cheer, sing, and wave flags for 90 plus minutes supporting the hometown team.

Away Watch Parties

Just because the team is out of town, there is still a reason to gather and watch away matches with friends. During away games, The Surge have a few locations where they hang out during the season. Watch parties go down at Eureka Heights, The Phoenix on Westheimer, and Second Draught in Midtown. You will need to check the group’s social media accounts to find out where the party will happen that week.

Away Day Trips

There is nothing better than to travel as a group and support your team in a different city. Away days are the best! The group will travel via bus, along with other Hustle Town supporters to Frisco on May 20th and Austin on June 24th this season. Each year the members vote on a match outside of Texas they would love to attend. In 2023, the winning vote is an away trip to St. Louis on June 3rd. Want to get away? Do it.

If the group appeals to you, then join the fun! Check out their social media accounts and find more information at wearethesurge.com.
