Welcome to The Weekend Whistle, our newest series here at Bayou City Soccer. Everyone is busy on the weekends, you don’t always have time to keep track of everything going on, especially in sports. Thats’s where The Weekend Whistle comes in. We’ll be recapping everything that happened at HDFC that you may have missed over the weekend. Let’s get right into it.
Houston Dynamo
The Dynamo headed up I-45 for a preseason meeting with FC Dallas, who they will also open the MLS season against on February 22. Erik Sviatchenko and Erik Duenas scored for Houston in a 2-2 draw. The Dynamo led 2-1 after the 75 minutes that the starters played.
Ben Olsen’s men will train Monday and Tuesday in Houston before going back to Florida, this time to Fort Lauderdale. The Dynamo will play the Columbus Crew for a preseason match on Wednesday and take on D.C. United on Saturday.
HDFC minority Tim Howard will speak to the media on Tuesday. He will take questions on the Dynamo and Dash’s upcoming seasons as well as the USWNT coming to Shell Energy Stadium on February 20 for the SheBelieves Cup.
Houston Dash
Speaking of the Dash, they will train in Houston a couple of days this week before flying west to Coachella. The Dash will face their first test of the preseason Saturday in California when they take on the San Diego Wave.
The USWNT roster for the SheBelieves Cup is set to be released Tuesday and we could see a couple of Dash players name to the team. Goalkeeper Jane Campbell was an alternate at last summer’s Olympics but could get a chance with former starter Alyssa Naeher retiring. Forward Yazmeen Ryan showed well in her first national team action at the end of 2024 and head coach Emma Hayes said recently she is excited to see what Ryan does this year. She could get that shot very soon.
Houston Dynamo 2
Dynamo Dos will finally get their preseason started as they scrimmage North Texas SC on Wednesday. New head coach Marcelo Santos has been with the first team so far this preseason, getting to see a number of his players train with the senior players. Now he’ll start to build out his team and see what he’s got against their in-state rivals.
