Welcome to The Weekend Whistle, our newest series here at Bayou City Soccer. Everyone is busy on the weekends, you don’t always have time to keep track of everything going on, especially in sports. Thats’s where The Weekend Whistle comes in. We’ll be recapping everything that happened at HDFC that you may have missed over the weekend. Let’s get right into it.

Houston Dynamo

The Dynamo continued camp in Tampa, Florida over the weekend. They will take on the New England Revolution this morning at 10 AM in a scrimmage before heading to Frisco for a preseason match with FC Dallas on Friday.

Off the field, the Dynamo made lots of news, first with the reported addition of USMNT midfielder Jack McGlynn. Houston is sending upwards of $2 million to the Philadelphia Union for the 21-year-old. McGlynn will slot right into a Dynamo midfield looking to retool after the departures of Hector Herrera and Coco Carrasquilla.

The Dynamo coaching staff added another member with the hiring of former Austin FC coach Josh Wolff. The 47-year-old worked with Pat Onstad and Asher Mendelsohn with the Columbus Crew and is good friends with Ben Olsen, going back to their playing days. Wolff is reportedly bringing one of his sons with him to Houston, with Tom Bogert reporting that the Dynamo have acquired the Academy rights to 16-year-old Gavin Wolff.

Houston Dash

The Dash added six new players to their preseason roster and non-roster invitees. Midfielders Kate Colvin, Alexis Fowlkes and Juliet Moore plus forward Makhiya McDonald joined up with the team over the weekend. Colvin and McDonald played collegiately at Texas A&M while Fowlkes and Moore both played at the University of Houston. Defenders Mieke Schiemann and Aidan McConnell will join up with the team this week.

New head coach Fabrice Gautrat got to show fans an early look at his team as the Dash hosted an open practice on Saturday for season ticket members. Fans got to watch the team practice and then mix and mingle with the players for photos and autographs.

The rumored transfer of Brazilian defender Tarciane was completed on Sunday with the Dash sending her to Olympique Lyonnais Féminin in France for a team record fee and among the highest in NWSL history. Houston acquired the 21-year-old from Corinthians in Brazil last April and she made 11 appearances for the Dash in 2024.

The Dash will participate in three events this week to celebrate the upcoming National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Sarah Puntigam and Natalie Jacobs will lead a free clinic at Freed Park from 4-6 PM on Wednesday. Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones will recognize the team and their impact on the community at 2 PM on Thursday during Commissioner’s Court. President of Women’s Soccer, Angela Hucles Mangano, Jane Campbell and Katie Lind will attend the recognition on Thursday in downtown Houston. The team will host a free clinic later that evening at Burnett Bayland Park with appearances from Sophie Schmidt and Bárbara Olivieri. Parents can click HERE for more information about the free clinics.

Houston Dynamo 2

Dynamo 2’s schedule preseason match with Houston Christian University this week was canceled. Dos will no kick off their preseason schedule on Wednesday, February 12 against North Texas SC at 11 AM at Houston Sports Park.
