USA vs Bolivia player ratings

The United States National Team began their Copa America run with a 2-0 win against Bolivia. Let’s take a look at how everyone performed.

Starters

Matt Turner-7

A solid game in net for a player searching for consistency at both the national team and club levels. He made no mistakes of note and made all the saves he should have made. It was nice to see Matt get a clean sheet as well.

Joe Scally-8

Scally is a player who has yet to really establish himself in the national team behind Sergino Dest. In these last two games he has made a real claim for regular minutes when Dest returns. He had some great moments against Brazil and now his most steady performance for the national team yet. He was aggressive on both sides of the ball and seemed to consistently be making the right decisions.

Chris Richards-8

Richards continues to be a monster in defense for the United States with another very good performance. Bolivia barely had a sniff of the goal and Richards was a huge part of that.

Tim Ream-7

Ream was also excellent on defense as he always tends to be. Playing out of the back, he had a few shaky moments, but this was a very solid performance for a guy who hasn’t seen the field much lately.

Antonee Robinson-9 (MOTM)

Robinson is arguably the next best player on this team behind Christian Pulisic in a position that has been wide open since DaMarcus Beasley’s decline over a decade ago. Robinson was the best player on the field in all aspects. He created chance after chance going forward while playing lock down defense. His work in the counter press was crucial to many of the chances created on the night.

Tyler Adams-5

Adams was given his first start in quite some time as he’s been battling injury for a year now. He was just ok on the night. He only played the first half while not making a huge mark on the game.

Weston McKennie-7

Weston had a pretty good night controlling the midfield. He never stood out in the way you would like him to, but was part of most of the things the United States did well in this game.

Gio Reyna-6

Reyna had a weird performance where he would disappear for 20 minutes and then pop up with a great pass only for him to disappear again. When he gets really involved, he’s one of the most talented players on the field. He was just too passive once again, which is his biggest criticism as a player.

Tim Weah-8

Tim was electric on the ball making some wonderful plays in transition. His work rate is actually what you want from an out and out winger. He could have been a bit cleaner in the final third, but overall, a really good performance.

Christian Pulisic-9

Pulisic struck again with another goal and assist for the national team, where he continues to be one of the most dangerous attackers in the Americas. His goal was exceptional and set the tone for the entire match. He could have been cleaner on a few occasions, but Christian went out there and delivered when it mattered most.

Folarin Balogun-6

It’s hard to say a player had a bad game when they scored a goal, but he came close to that. His touch was all over the place as well as his positioning during some crucial moments of buildup. He took his goal well and at the end of the day that’s what gets you over the line in terms of results. Although, it is worrying how little he has seemed to improve over the last year.

Substitutes

Yunus Musah-7

Musah came on for Adams at halftime and put in a really positive shift. He looked really good in tight spaces, moving the ball through the midfield. He had one play that perfectly describes Musah as a player where he burst past a player on the wing and then over hit the cross for a thrown in. He’s so close to being a nailed-on starter at the highest level, but he just needs that bit of polish.

Ricardo Pepi-5

Pepi was the hardest player to rate in this entire squad as he was the striker getting in the best positions and making life really difficult for Bolivia’s backline, yet he failed to score. Pepi took six shots, which is exactly what you want to see out of a young striker. He was really unlucky on a few occasions as well as just failing to convert on other chances. The law of averages says he will eventually start scoring loads of goals if he continues to get in these types of positions.

Johnny Cardoso-6

Johnny came on for Reyna to see out the game with 25 minutes remaining. He was good, that’s really all there is to say about Johnny. He came in, saw out the game and made no mistakes. A perfect sub appearance in this game environment.

Luca De La Torre and Brendan Aaronson-N/A

Both players came on really late into the game and didn’t see the field enough to make an impact and receive a score.

Head Coach

Gregg Berhalter-8

Gregg put out his best XI and they got the job done pretty comfortably. What more can you ask for to open up a tournament? Bolivia never seemed like they were ever in the game and Berhalter’s team outplayed them the whole 90 minutes. Yeah, they should have scored a few more goals, but that’s more on the individuals than on the coaching staff.
