Bayou City Soccer Podcast - Mike Chabala
Welcome to the Bayou City Soccer Podcast! We had the opportunity to chat with 2x MLS Cup winner, founder and CEO of Sphere, Mike Chabala. Mike was part of the golden years of the Houston Dynamo coming in as a rookie. We learned about how he fell in love with soccer and what led to his college soccer career playing for the University of Washington, located in Seattle.
He was drafted 44th overall in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft by the Houston Dynamo. He would be a part of the team that would win 2 MLS Cup finals in their first 2 years of existence. Mike had to compete for the left back position against one of the best to ever do it in the league in Wade Barrett. Mike also spent time with the Portland Timbers and DC United, before returning to Houston again.
Chabala shares how life after soccer was for him and how his entrepreneurship led him to create Sphere. During his transition to corporate America, he continued to train himself in case he was presented with an opportunity to get back into the league. Unable to find a team with whom to train, he looked at fitness classes and concepts that could supplement the structure and atmosphere that he needed to be at the peak of his game. Class after class and concept after concept disappointed and frustrated him. When he realized that what he was looking for was something that didn't yet exist, he decided to create it. And, Sphere was born.
