The Houston Dash fell to the Orlando Pride Friday night at Shell Energy Stadium. Orlando came away with the 1-0 win in both teams return to NWSL league play following the Summer Olympics and the NWSL x Liga MX Summer Cup.

Following their momentum from consecutive wins in the Summer Cup, acting head coach Ricky Clarke aimed to continue the team’s strong form against a formidable Orlando Pride team. Captain Jane Campbell returned to goal after the Olympics, and Clarke made strategic adjustments in midfield with Elin Rubensson available for selection and Yuki Nagasato starting alongside Andressa to support Diana Ordonez in attack.

Despite the typical rustiness expected after a break, both teams came out aggressively. The first half was evenly matched in terms of possession, with Orlando creating clearer chances. However, the Dash’s solid organization and crucial saves by Jane Campbell and Tarciane, particularly against efforts from Marta and Barbara Banda, kept the score level at 0-0.

The second half started poorly for the Dash when Michelle Alozie, who had been substituted in at halftime, was fouled by Emily Sams. Although it appeared Alozie might have to leave the field, she persevered and made a significant impact with her dynamic play.

Orlando Pride, determined to secure a win, eventually broke through in the 67th minute. Angelina delivered a precise through ball to Summer Yates, who outpaced Natalie Jacobs and slotted past Campbell to put the Pride ahead 1-0.

The Dash’s best chance in the second half came from an Andressa header that struck the post. Alozie also had a chance from close range but Orlando goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse denied her. Despite a few opportunities to equalize, the Dash couldn’t convert and the game ended 1-0 in favor of the Pride.

For their first game back after a nearly three-week hiatus and against the league leaders, the Dash showed commendable effort. While the loss is disappointing, there were positives, such as Tarciane’s commanding presence in defense. However, the team still struggles with finishing chances and questions remain, particularly with Diana Ordonez being substituted for Alozie at the half with no clear striker replacement. The Dash now must regroup and prepare for their next match.

Houston will host the Utah Royals next Saturday at 8:30 PM at Shell Energy Stadium, with the game streamed on ION TV.
