Enemy Scouting Report - Chicago Stars

The Houston Dash put on a promising performance in their home opener under new head coach Fabrice Gautrat. While they ultimately fell to the Washington Spirit, the match provided a glimpse of the tactical identity Gautrat is beginning to implement. Now, the Dash head north to face the Chicago Red Stars, a team coming off a crushing defeat to the reigning NWSL champions.

Chicago endured a difficult 2024 season, where they snuck into the last playoff spot and their 6-0 loss to Orlando in the season opener suggests they may be in for another tough campaign. While it’s still early, the absence of their star playmaker, Mallory Swanson, who has yet to report due to personal reasons, leaves a significant void. As a result, veteran goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher will be relied upon more than ever to keep her team competitive. However, even one of the best goalkeepers in USWNT history struggled against Orlando’s relentless attack.

For Houston, containing forward Allyson Schlegel will be key, as she has a knack for finding the back of the net and creating danger in the final third. Meanwhile, former Dash midfielder Shea Groom will be pulling the strings for Chicago, and Houston will need to disrupt her playmaking to limit the Stars’ attacking opportunities.
