Three players to watch: Chicago Stars

Each week we’ll be looking more into the Houston Dash’s opponent, talking to media that covers the team, digging into what we can expect from that squad, and in this series, taking a look at three players to watch from the upcoming opponent. The Dash are on the road for the first time in 2025 for a visit to the newly renamed Chicago Stars FC. Here are three players to keep an eye on in this afternoon’s match.

Alyssa Naeher

The former USWNT goalkeeper will be the key defensive force for this team. With Mallory Swanson currently away for personal reasons, Alyssa has stepped up even more as a team leader. Her resume speaks for itself at the national team level, and she has been the backbone of this Chicago defense for years. The Dash will need to be creative to break through Naeher, possibly taking notes from how the Pride managed to challenge her last week.

Julia Grosso

Despite the team's struggles, the Canadian international midfielder has been a bright spot. Now in her first full season with Chicago, Grosso will look to showcase her ability to control the tempo of the game. Her experience with Juventus and Canada will help her dictate play, whether through progressive passes or carries in the midfield. The Dash will need to ensure she doesn't have a major impact on the game.

Samantha Staab

Coming off a season-ending injury, the NWSL veteran center-back can cause problems for any team. A versatile defender, she can disrupt opponents with long balls that open up dangerous counterattacks. If it's not her passing that poses a threat, she can hurt you with her goal-scoring ability and by clearing out attacking threats on the other side. Although she's had a slow start returning from injury, the Dash should not underestimate her.
