2024 in review
Yuki Nagasato joined the Houston Dash in the offseason to strengthen the midfield, following the departures of several key players. With her experience and goal-scoring ability, she seemed poised to provide something new off the bench. However, her start was rocky.
In Fran Alonso’s system, Nagasato struggled to find a defined role in the lineup. Even when substituted in to replace players like Andressa, Barbara Olivieri, or Sarah Puntigam, she appeared out of sync and ineffective in the midfield. As a result, her minutes on the field were limited.
That all changed when Ricky Clarke took over as acting head coach. His tactical adjustments benefitted several players, including Nagasato. Under Clarke’s system, she became a regular starter, building strong partnerships with Olivieri and Puntigam. As her confidence grew, so did her influence in the attack, offering the Dash new options in the final third and becoming a constant offensive threat.
Moment of the season
Yuki’s goal against the Seattle Reign should undoubtedly be the Goal of the Year for the Dash. It showcased her ability to be dangerous from anywhere on the pitch, with incredible power and precision. It was a stunning strike—one that had fans screaming in excitement as it hit the back of the net.
Looking forward
Nagasato signed a two-year contract with the Dash when she joined before this season. Depending on the coach and the system they implement, we could see the Yuki from the start of the season or the Yuki who made a late-season impact. Her experience and goal-scoring ability bring something special to the table, but will she be a cornerstone to build around? At 37 years old, it seems unlikely.
