HOUSTON DASH ASSISTANT COACH RICKY CLARKE
On the victory:
“What we saw tonight was a real team performance. We came to (San Diego) and said we were going to defend differently. We had to be brave and compact. What you saw tonight was areas in the game where we said we wanted to win the ball and in certain spaces. That’s where our goals came from. I’m delighted for the team.”
On the lineup:
“We felt like it would be more of a battle, we knew we had to compete against some things we couldn’t control. We also still had some injuries in the group. It was about, how do we take away what (San Diego) are good at, which is their wide areas. We tried to nullify that and make it difficult for them to play into those areas. We also knew we couldn't sit in those spaces all the time. So, when we won the ball, we had to attack those spaces. Our first goal comes from that, it came from a switch and attacking the front post, which is something we spoke about. Our second goal was from Barbara (Olivieri), jumping and winning the ball off their center back, which is also something we spoke about in the wide area. It’s one of those games where we executed all we spoke about, and it was a proper village effort.”
On the defenders’ performances tonight:
“I don't think Paige Nielsen gets spoken about enough across the league, she's come into our organization, and she’s been a leader. She’s played anywhere along the back line, in a three-back, as a center back and as an outside back tonight. I just don’t think she’s been spoken about, there’s a lot of defenders in this league that have been spoken about, but for me the way Nielsen has performed since she’s been in the Houston Dash. You know exactly what you’re getting from her in every game. We’ve spoken about Tarciane, Nielsen and (Allysha) Chapman, but we’ve also got to speak about Jyllissa (Harris). Jyllissa was brilliant tonight, she found the right passes. Whether it was short or behind, she worked incredibly well. Tarciane and Jyllissa have not played in the back with each other this year, seeing that performance tonight was impressive.”
HOUSTON DASH GOALKEEPER JANE CAMPBELL
On team communication:
"Players are getting really good minutes here. It's really cool to see everybody prosper when their name is called. The communication piece is always a big part of our game. We've had this reputation of this defensive team and that comes with tons of communication. I'm just trying to be kind of a soundboard for everybody, someone to lean on. I don't think I have all the answers, but I think I have a good viewpoint back there. I can see the whole field and I can see every player. So, I try to just help everyone communicate as best they can and, you know, the big part about communication is you also have to listen. So, I think everybody does a really good job hearing each other out there and really, really just trying to stay organized and give San Diego a hard time."
On the backline:
"They did incredible. Best on pitch by far, at least defensively. I'm sure Barbara (Olivieri) and Ramona (Bachmann) need to get their flowers as well offensively. I thought (the outside backs) were best on pitch. We all love Maria (Sanchez) to death, but I thought Paige (Nielsen) really just shut her down. I thought Chappy was going crazy out there on the left. Coming back from being a mom, and it's cool to see her kind of back in her own groove now. Now that she's got Tavish cheering on in the stands, it's really, something special to see. So, I think we're all really, really proud of her. I thought they did incredible. The whole defensive line did amazing. There's some shifting around. Jyllissa (Harris) filled in and Tarciane is back in and Paige had to move out wide instead of being central. I'm just really proud of everyone. They really stepped up tonight."
HOUSTON DASH DEFENDER JYLLISSA HARRIS
On the victory:
“Definitely a hard-fought game. We as a team had to come together and defend our box well and capitalize on the chances that we got. Really good win for us and we’re looking forward to going into the last two games of the season.”
On the starting eleven:
“The team is used to different lineups, it's been a year of adversities, and unexpected injuries. We knew coming into this week we’d see something different. Yuki (Nagasato) has played the 10 for us this season so going to the nine is pretty natural. We’ve all been training together like that all week so for us it’s something that we are used to. We felt good going into this game with a good lineup and good stuff off the bench.”
