Anatomy of a Goal: Steres makes it 4 for 4 at Shell Energy Stadium
BennyBall strikes again. The Houston Dynamo are now a perfect four for four at Shell Energy Stadium this season after beating Inter Miami 1-0 on Saturday night. Houston withstood the pressure from the visitors and then defender Daniel Steres made the most of his chance to score the only goal of the match.
Today we’re breaking down the build up that led to Steres’ goal. All the images we’re using are from the Apple TV broadcast and Major League Soccer’s YouTube highlight video.
The play begins with Hector Herrera (circled) on the ball. The Dynamo captain is progressing forward with 4 players in front of him, and one other player off screen to the right that will play a role in this goal.
Herrera plays the ball to Amine Bassi (left circle), who has checked back for the ball. We now see Corey Baird (right circle) coming in from the wing, where he moved when Sebas Ferreira came on, to get involved in the attack.
Bassi (top circle) is surrounded by Miami players and finds the pass to Coco Carrasquilla (bottom circle). Ferreira (right circle) has also checked to the ball and is calling for a pass.
Bassi finds Carrasquilla (left circle) with his pass and the play begins to open up. Ferreira and Steres (center circles) are the furthest players forward and Baird (right circle) is calling for the ball into space with no defenders on him.
Coco (left circle) picks out Baird (right circle) with space ahead to run into. Ferreira (center circle) has occupied two defenders to allow space wide.
One center back tracks the run of Baird who receives the pass on his back foot (right circle) and cushions a header back to the path of Steres (bottom circle). Ferreira (top circle) is also an option.
Baird’s header finds Steres in stride (bottom circle) and he has a first time shot with his left. Ferreira (top circle) does well to see his teammate is shooting and move his body to avoid blocking the ball.
Steres’ shot is deflected by Miami defender Serhiy Kryvtsov and pops up, away from goalkeeper Drake Callender’s low dive.
As the ball finds the back of the net, Bassi (left circle) shouts in excitement while Baird (right circle) begins to run to the fans to celebrate. Ferreira (center circle) looks back at Steres, seemingly in awe of what just happened.
What just happened was a Major League Soccer record four straight wins at home with a clean sheet to open a season. The Dynamo are buzzing at Shell Energy Stadium in 2023.
