Dynamo loan Sebastian Ferreira to Vasco da Gama

The Sebastian Ferreira saga has reached a temporary solution. The Houston Dynamo have loaned their Designated Player striker to Vasco da Gama in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. Ferreira’s loan will run until the winter and the move will not free up a Designated Player spot.

Ferreira joined the Dynamo on January 18, 2022, signing as a Designated Player from Club Libertad in Paraguay. The signing was a club record for the Dynamo and has been reported as more than $4 million. Ferreira made 42 appearances for Houston, but made just two starts this season as he fell out of favor with head coach Ben Olsen. The Paraguayan scored 14 goals in all competitions, all of those coming in 2022.

“This has been a challenging year for Sebas, and we are happy to find a solution that gives him an opportunity for more playing time in a top league for the next five months,” said Dynamo general manager, Pat Onstad. “Sebas had a difficult time earning minutes early this season meanwhile our group has been above the playoff line for most of the season, while also advancing to the semifinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. We started the season with a different plan for Sebas, but situations changed. We hope this time away is good for him and we look forward to welcoming him back in January.”

While Ferreira is only on loan, the hope will be that he plays well enough in Brazil to get Vasco, or another team, to want to purchase him. Vasco are currently last place in the league and will hope Ferreira can keep them from being relegated. The Dynamo will also hope Ferreira does that so that he regains some value. Right now, in his current form and lack of playing time, there are no teams that are going to give the Dynamo anything of value in a transfer, especially with the contract Ferreira will want from whatever club he would go to (or his current contract if he were moved within Major League Soccer).

The transfer window in MLS closes next week, on Wednesday, August 2. With Ferreira’s roster spot and an additional international slot traded for, could the Dynamo looking to add players? There is also the possibility of Coco Carrasquilla being sold but that deadline would be whatever country and league he is being sold to, meaning it could happen after Wednesday.
