Daniel Steres returned to the lineup, replacing Tate Schmitt at left back. Dallas got the match started on the front foot with Bernard Kamungo getting in behind and forcing a save from Steve Clark in the 2nd minute. It showed early intent for the away side that they were coming into this match looking to get up early.
Dynamo captain Hector Herrera also returned to the starting eleven and looked to have a golden chance in the 9th minute. The Mexican international was played in behind the defense but tried to round FC Dallas goalkeeper Maarten Paes and had the ball knocked away. The flag went up for offside, negating the play after the fact.
Artur then got into the attack, firing a chance from outside the box right to Paes in the 16th minute. The half wore on and the teams battled for possession. Houston’s next chance came in the 35th minute, when Artur once again got forward. Herrera laid a ball back to the Brazilian and he tested Paes again. The Dallas keeper got down to his left and made the save.
The Dynamo took the lead on the stroke of halftime thanks to some good build up on the left. Steres got forward into the box and squared a ball across toward the penalty spot. Amine Bassi was there to sweep the ball past Paes and give Houston the 1-0 lead just before the whistle sent the teams to the locker rooms.
The second half began with Dallas looking to get themselves back into the game. Clark palmed away a Dallas corner in the 66th minute to keep the game scoreless. Dallas would keep the pressure on and find their equalizer minutes later. A good bit of play in the box led to a ball across that Petar Musa was able to put away in the 69th minute to tie the game.
During the goal, Artur tracked back to defend and inadvertently ran right into Clark, injuring the Houston goalkeeper. He was down for a few minutes receiving treatment on his face and had to be taken off, replaced by Andrew Tarbell.
It was the home side that pushed for a winner as the second half wound down but it wasn’t to come. The best chances came in second half stoppage time with Aliyu Ibrahim having a shot blocked by the Dallas defense in the box and an Erik Sviatchenko header flashing wide. The final whistle would blow with both teams settling for just a point in a 1-1 draw.
Houston will hit the road next weekend with a west coast trip to take on the LA Galaxy. That match is set for May 25 with kickoff at 9:40 PM.
