Erik Sviatchenko has exemplified class and professionalism since his arrival in Houston, and 2024 was no exception. The veteran center back continued to command the Dynamo’s defensive line, playing alongside Micael in over 50 matches and significantly contributing to his teammate’s development. His leadership on and off the field was apparent, with constant communication and encouragement for his teammates during matches. Erik’s efforts were instrumental in Houston achieving one of the best defensive records in Major League Soccer.

Off the pitch, Sviatchenko demonstrated his commitment to the team and community by regularly engaging with fans and addressing the media, regardless of the outcome of matches. He consistently handled tough questions with transparency, showcasing his maturity and dedication. Despite his extensive career, Erik remained versatile and eager to push forward in attack when the opportunity arose, solidifying his status as a role model for Dynamo fans of all ages. Truly, a top professional.

Moment of the season

The highlight of Erik’s 2024 season was undoubtedly scoring his first MLS goal—a spectacular effort that epitomized his technical ability—against the New England Revolution. In a well-rehearsed set piece, Sviatchenko controlled the ball masterfully with his chest before delivering a perfectly executed volley past the goalkeeper. Unsure how to celebrate, Erik humorously admitted he might need his kids’ help practicing celebrations for the future. All jokes aside, it was a stunning moment that encapsulated his quality and composure as a player.

Looking forward

Signed in March 2023, Erik’s current contract runs through the end of the 2024 season, with an option for 2025. While the club has not officially announced his option being exercised, comments suggest he is expected to remain with the Dynamo for the upcoming season. This could hint at a potential contract extension already in the works. Erik and his family have embraced life in Houston, and his enthusiasm for being part of the club and city indicates his desire for a long-term stay. Fans eagerly await an official statement from the Dynamo on his contract status this offseason.
