While the Houston Dynamo struggled with scoring early in the season, they broke the bank and signed Ezequiel Ponce in July for a club record transfer. He quickly adapted to the system, adding a much-needed attacking threat to the Houston lineup. Ponce had the opportunity to find his rhythm during the Leagues Cup, gaining valuable match experience with the team. Initially, it was a slow start as he worked to regain his form and match fitness. However, once he found his groove, Ponce began delivering key passes, getting into dangerous areas, and providing the defensive support that Ben Olsen expects from his forwards.

Despite joining the league later in the season, Ponce contributed five goals in 10 MLS matches—scoring once every other match. This is exactly what you need from a forward: a consistent goal-scoring threat who fits the coach's system. Ponce checks all of those boxes.

Moment of the season

A forward needs to score all types of goals—tap-ins, headers, finesse shots, chip shots, you name it. What the Dynamo had been missing was someone unafraid to shoot from anywhere on the field, especially outside the box. This goal perfectly showcased the qualities Ponce brings to the team: fearless, powerful, and determined to score.

Looking forward

Ponce signed a long-term contract with the Dynamo through 2027, with an option for 2028. Undoubtedly, he will be the cornerstone around which the Dynamo build for years to come. With a strong preseason, he can pick up where he left off last season and reach new heights with the team in 2025.
