Houston Dynamo player ratings vs Charlotte FC

The Dynamo disappointingly lost 2-1 at home against Charlotte FC, which saw them crash out of Leagues Cup. Let’s take a look at how everyone performed.

Starters

Steve Clark-3

A rough night for Steve who has been excellent most of the season to this point. He made four saves, which is great, but when the team needed him most he made an awful decision to come off his line against Patrick Agyemang and gave up an easy goal. Poor communication just seconds later led to the own goal as well.

Griffin Dorsey-9

Leagues Cup Griffin Dorsey will go down as one of the best few weeks of form we have seen from a Dynamo player in years. Once again, he was incredible playing his heart out on both sides of the ball. He created multiple chances and carried the team in transition to perfection in moments. His play in the buildup to the goal was superb and some of the best play we have seen all season from this team.

Erik Sviatchenko-5

Throughout most of the first half he was superb, locking down a lot of what Karol Swiderski was attempting to do. He was dominant in the air for the most part and continued to put his body on the line for the team. However, he had one awful moment where he positioned himself terribly and let Agyemang get position on him that led to the first Charlotte goal. His long passing was also off compared to the usual.

Micael-2

When you look at Micael’s overall performance, for 89 minutes of this game he was solid. That one minute where he made the worst pass of his career soured the entire night and rightfully so. That was an appalling decision that cost his team in the end. The Dynamo are really missing Teenage Hadebe in these moments.

Franco Escobar-3

It was a really uncharacteristic night for Escobar where he struggled on both sides of the ball. He had two great moments to score a goal but opted for a pass that was blocked instead. If you are going to venture forward as a fullback, you must have the confidence to shoot the ball. Kamil Jozwiak had his way with Franco for a lot of this game.

Artur-8

This was a really solid and consistent performance from Artur throughout the game. His passing was excellent, and he dominated the midfield for moments of the game. Not a very flashy performance, but he did the dirty work and kept the ball ticking phenomenally.

Hector Herrera-5

Herrera was excellent from deeper positions like usual, but he just looked completely off his game in the final third. Even his long switches lacked accuracy. He was passive on defense for a lot of the game and just never made the mark you expect from your star player. It does look evident that he needs this two-week rest. He looked exhausted out there in the second half.

Amine Bassi-5

Similar to Herrera where he looked good in buildup, but just could not get anything going in the final third. His pressing was excellent when he led the line in the second half. All around not good enough throughout the 90 minutes.

Coco Carrasquilla-2

It was very alarming how quiet Coco was throughout this game. He made almost no impact on the field whatsoever and went missing for most of the game. He had one great chance to score but it was deflected just wide. The Dynamo need more from a player of his caliber.

Nelson Quinones-7

Nelson was electric throughout the first half, running at the back line. He got his head up and made the perfect cross to set up the early goal. He played great defense as well. Quinones needs to play more than just 60 minutes going forward.

Corey Baird-8

Corey was slotted back in as the striker after a long stint on the wing. He did a great job leading the line with his intelligent movement and work ethic. He scored his goal fantastically and had an all around great game. He is really having a much better season than some might lead you to believe.

Substitutes

Luis Caicedo-9

Caicedo wanted this win more then anyone on the field when he came on. In his first action when he came on he did very well to win a free kick in a dangerous spot. His work rate and ability to win duels in the midfield was outstanding. His passing game was calm and accurate. Caicedo is such a terrific player to bring off the bench. Sadly, some individuals let him down on the night.

Aliyu Ibrahim-3

You have to feel bad for Aliyu at this point. How can one player miss so many chances from point blank range in a single tournament. It’s getting to the point of insanity. He needs to do better and put away these chances going forward. These two weeks off should be great for him as he never got an offseason.

Ivan Franco and Thor Ulfarsson-N/A

Both came on right at the end to try and steal a goal and neither were effective in the slightest. Not enough time to give them a fair ranking, however.

Head Coach

Ben Olsen-7

Ben set up the team well and made the perfect call to play Corey as the striker. The team played hard and fought very well until the 80th minute. You could say he made a defensive sub too early, but it was to counter the two offensive subs Charlotte made minutes earlier. Two massive individual errors has to frustrate Ben more than anyone.
