Houston Dynamo player ratings vs New York City FC

Another week and another win for the Dynamo, this time beating New York City FC in a hard fought 1-0 win. Let’s look at how everyone performed.

Starters

Steve Clark-7

Another solid performance and clean sheet for Steve Clark. Steve did not have much to do being NYC only had one shot on goal, but he did what he had to do with solid distribution and commanding his box on set pieces.

Daniel Steres-9

Steres once again got the start at right back and was very impressive. Daniel shut down everything NYCFC tried doing down the left side, even when they had Talles Magno play wide and have Braian Cufre join the attack. It’s going to be very difficult for Franco Escobar to win that spot back.

Ethan Bartlow-9

Ethan has been transformed four games into the season, looking like an incredible defender compared to last season. Bartlow was massive on both the ground and in the air, making five headed clearances. This was easily Ethan’s most impressive performance so far.

Teenage Hadebe-8

Another incredibly solid performance from Teenage. Hadebe dealt with almost everything in front of him and was extremely effective playing out of the back. Teenage did have one very bad giveaway in the second half, however.

Tate Schmitt-8

Schmitt kept up the level of performance we saw in the second half against Austin last week for the entirety of this game. Tate was excellent defensively against a strong opponent and pressed and carried the ball in transition to good effect.

Artur-9

Artur is really looking like one of the best acquisitions of the entire off season right now. Artur does incredibly well to put out all the fires that come with Hector Herrera and Brooklyn Raines pushing forward, while also being the calmest player on the field in possession.

Hector Herrera-9

Another dominant display from one of the best players in MLS this season. Herrera was everywhere, dominating the touches and controlling the game. Hector was able to win three tackles and complete 92% of his passes. The Dynamo captain also won the penalty that resulted in the game-winning goal.

Brooklyn Raines-7

Raines looked very solid in his first ever start in Major League Soccer. The teenager was a lot calmer on the ball then he was in his debut last season. His pressing played a big role in shutting down New York’s buildup and he also played a major role in the penalty.

Amine Bassi-6

Bassi struggled a ton at times in this game. His passing in the final third was not as great as you would hope for the playmaker. Just like last week, we can see the ideas, but the execution is not there yet. Also, like last week he scored his penalty, which raises his score a bit.

Nelson Quinones-5

Nelson, on the ball, really struggled to get super involved in this game, only having 23 touches. With those touches he did not complete any of his dribbles or crosses. Nelson is still young and improving but he did not make the most of his first start. Working hard to win the ball back leading to the penalty did save what was a poor night for Quinones.

Corey Baird-6

Baird definitely played his best game this season, but it was not as good as you hope for a starting striker. Once again Baird struggled to make any impact at all in the offense, other than hitting the post on a sitter. He did, however, have an amazing game off the ball, pressing and creating issues for New York’s backline. The defending up the field played a big role but we still need more from Corey.

Subs

Luis Caicedo-7

Caicedo was the first sub brought on, being given 24 minutes to play. Caicedo added more structure to the shape of the team and allowed Raines to continue pressing higher. Luis did just about everything expected of him to see out the game.

Griffin Dorsey-5

Not the greatest appearance, but not the worst either for Dorsey. Griffin did add a little bit of defensive cover when Cufre started pushing forward more often. Dorsey did struggle to transition the ball, completing none of his dribbles. He did create a decent chance for Sebas that he could not get his foot on cleanly.

Sebastian Ferreira-6

Once again coming off the bench, Sebas did have a much better showing than against Austin and New England. Sebas worked hard to defend the 1-0 lead. Coach Ben Olsen did make a point to say that Ferreira did a great, selfless job in a tough role to see out the game.

Coach

Ben Olsen-9

Another great defensive game plan from Olsen. He knew how New York likes to possess and build from the back and he did not allow them to do that at all. Bringing in Brooklyn Raines to provide the press instead of being a bit safer starting Caicedo proved to be an incredible decision that ultimately won the Dynamo three points.
