Houston Dynamo SuperDraft history

The 2024 MLS SuperDraft takes place today at 2:00 PM CT. Throughout the years, Houston’s picks have not yielded the best results, even with the club picking in the top ten due to finishing so low in the standings the previous season.

Currently, there are 2 players on the roster that the club picked in the SuperDraft, defender Ethan Bartlow and forward Thorleifur Ulfarsson. Bartlow was drafted 6th overall from the University of Washington back in 2021 and has appeared in 42 regular season matches with the Dynamo. Thor, who was selected 4th overall the following year, has played in 49 regular season games and has found the back of the net 7 times for Houston.

Historically speaking, Houston Dynamo’s record of hitting on picks in the MLS SuperDraft is quite low. Here are some players who did leave their mark with the club. Maybe the Dynamo can find another today?

Corey Ashe

Corey Ashe was drafted by the Houston Dynamo in the second round of the 2007 MLS SuperDraft with the 26th overall pick. After having a standout career with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Ashe was quickly plugged into the team sheet to help the Dynamo win their second straight MLS Cup. Corey played left wing and left back, accumulating over 200 games during his 9 seasons with the club. Ashe played in both 2011 and 2012 MLS Cups finals, where LA Galaxy got the best of Houston.

Geoff Cameron

Geoff Cameron was drafted by the Houston Dynamo in the third round, 42nd overall, in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft. Cameron started his college career playing for the West Virginia Mountaineers before transferring to the University of Rhode Island. Cameron was a physical defender who spent 5 seasons with the Dynamo before making the jump to the English Premier League with Stoke City in the summer of 2012. Geoff was a starter for the 2011 MLS Cup final, alongside Corey Ashe, that ended in disappointment.

Will Bruin

Will Bruin was drafted by the Houston Dynamo with the 11th overall pick of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft. The St. Louis native spent his college soccer career playing for the Indiana Hoosiers, one of the best soccer programs in the country. Bruin spent 6 seasons with the Dynamo before being traded to the Seattle Sounders at the end of 2016. Bruin could not stop scoring in an orange jersey during his time in Houston. Will is currently the third all-time leading scorer for the club, only behind Brian Ching (56) and Mauro Manotas (51), with 50 goals in 178 regular season games.

Due to the great performance by the Dynamo in 2023, the club will pick late in each round they hold a pick in. It is quite evident that the Dynamo are desperate to find an attacking piece that can lead the team in the final third and create goal scoring opportunities. The question here is, can Houston find a hidden gem in this year’s SuperDraft?
