Reports: Coco Carrasquilla closing in on move to LIGA MX
The yearly saga of Coco Carrasquilla transfer rumors seems to finally be coming true. According to a report from MLS insider Tom Bogert, Carrasquilla is in advanced talks for a transfer to a LIGA MX club, honoring the Panamanian’s wish for a new challenge.
Journalist César Luis Merlo reports that the LIGA MX club negotiating with Carrasquilla is Pumas.
Carrasquilla joined the Dynamo in August of 2021, originally on loan from FC Cartagena in Spain. Houston exercised the option to purchase Carrasquilla in May of 2022, for reportedly close to $2 million. Coco will finish his career with the Dynamo with 9 goals and 13 assists across four seasons. Unfortunately, like Hector Herrera, Carrasquilla’s last game in orange saw him sent off with a red card in the MLS Cup Playoffs against Seattle.
Carrasquilla won the 2023-24 Concacaf Player of the Year in October after his performances for Panama drew international praise. After Herrera’s departure, it was assumed Carrasquilla would take over the former captain’s role in the midfield. With Coco now leaving as well, the Dynamo will have two holes in midfield to fill.
Bogert also reported that the Dynamo are working on a Designated Player number 10. Signing a 10 would allow the Dynamo to move Amine Bassi back in midfield or wide on the right where Carrasquilla played most of the time under Ben Olsen. This would then leave Houston needing someone in the 8 role where Herrera played. Homegrown Brooklyn Raines could make the jump this season, or Pat Onstad and the front office could look for another move.
We will have much more on this as Carrasquilla’s transfer is completed.
