Houstonians FC brings pathway to pro to Volt League
If you know the Houston youth soccer scene, than you’ve definitely heard of Houstonians FC. Founded in 1996, the Houstonians Futbol Club was the very first inner-city organization funded by the City of Houston. The intent of the program was to retain the talented soccer players in every age group in the Bayou City. The inner city can be tough on the youth, so the club used soccer and teamwork for the kids to stay away from encounters with crime. As of now, the club has teams as young as under-5 in their academy, in which the teams are provided with professional training sessions.
Houstonians FC has been a pathway to college education as well as to a professional career since its inception. Former Houston Dynamo player Memo Rodriguez is probably one of the most memorable stories correlating with Houstonians FC. Memo’s mom would drive him over an hour each way for almost 12 years so he could play club soccer at a more competitive level with Houstonians and eventually with the Dynamo Academy. Memo is now currently playing for Austin FC in his seventh season in Major League Soccer.
Another former Houstonian FC player in MLS is Sebastien Ibeagha. The centerback, similar to Memo, played with Houstonians FC before moving to the Dynamo’s youth system. Ibeagha attended Hightower High School in Missouri City and was named Dynamo Acadmey Player of the Year in 2009. Sebastien currently plays for FC Dallas after winning MLS Cup in 2022 with LAFC.
Now, as part of the organizations fullfillment in the final phase, Houstonians FC will have a team competing in the Volt League this season. The club has a talented roster and an amazing coaching staff, who will look at making a statement in Volt League.
