Early red card dooms Dynamo in loss to Dallas
Anything can happen in a derby match. The emotion can lead to unpredictability. There are usually some crazy things that happen, but maybe not as crazy as a 5th minute straight red card. That’s what happened to the Dynamo Saturday night in Frisco as they were forced to play the majority of the match with ten men in a 2-0 loss to FC Dallas.
Unpredictability started nearly from the jump when Griffin Dorsey saw red after just five minutes. Marco Farfan broke down Dallas’ left side and Dorsey took him down. Referee Lukasz Szpala deemed it to be a DOGSO offence and sent Dorsey off. Houston would have to play 85 minutes a man down. Asier Illaramendi would ring the post right after the red card signaling a warning shot to the Dynamo.
Daniel Steres came on in the 19th minute to replace Latif Blessing and try and solidiy the back line. The Dynamo held defensively in the first half to keep Dallas at bay. Houston got a couple of chances to break against the run of play but couldn’t string anything together. After 40 minutes a man down, the Dynamo took a 0-0 score line to half time.
Dallas came out in the second half looking to take advantage of their numerical advantage. The home side found the break through in the 55th minute through their record signing. Dallas won possession outside the box on their right side and slid a ball into Petar Musa in the box. The big striker got an angle and chipped the ball over Steve Clark and into the side netting at the back post to put FC Dallas up 1-0.
Ben Olsen brought Hector Herrera on for Franco Escobar in the 66th minute to try and turn things around, even down a man. Dallas kept the pressure on and the Dynamo just couldn’t find an outlet to get forward. The home side would seal the three points in the 80th minute with a goal straight out of Houston.
Former Dynamo defender Sam Junqua got on the end of a recycled ball on the right side and chipped a ball into the box. It found the head of former Dynamo Academy player Sebastien Ibeagha as he rose to slam home the second goal of the evening.
Dallas comfortably saw out the 2-0 win. It’s the second straight loss for the Dynamo against in-state opposition after last weekend’s loss to Austin. Houston will return to Shell Energy Stadium next week to try and turn things around. They will welcome St. Louis CITY SC to town, a team they eliminated from Concacaf Champions Cup play earlier this year.
